No More Need for Help Drilling Your Own Well! Mini Drills Make it Easy to Have Your Own Private Well
Mini drills certainly lower the barrier to entry for well drilling, but the process is far from "easy." If you're really interested in trying, here's a responsible guide.
Key Warning: Prerequisites are More Important Than Drilling Themselves
Before considering purchasing or renting equipment, you must complete the following steps:
Policy and Regulations Check (Most Important!): Consult your local water authority or natural resources department to find out if private well drilling is permitted.
Many areas, especially cities and suburbs, have strict regulations on groundwater extraction. Drilling a well privately may be illegal and subject to penalties and mandatory backfilling.
Geological and Hydrological Assessment: Ask your neighbors or long-time residents about the depth of the groundwater level and the geological structure (soft soil, sand, or hard rock).
If the groundwater level is too deep (e.g., over 20 meters) or the groundwater is primarily hard rock, a mini drill will be ineffective.
Safety Risk Assessment: Ensure sufficient operating space in the yard, away from power lines, gas pipelines, septic tanks, and underground cables.
Well drilling is a physically demanding and high-risk operation; precautions must be taken against borehole collapse, mechanical injuries, and other accidents.
If you have confirmed that well drilling is feasible, here is an overview of the steps:
Step 1: Choosing a Suitable Small Drilling Rig
Type: For yard work, a small hydraulic rotary drill or down-the-hole hammer drill is typically chosen.
Power: Options include 220V household power supply and diesel engine drive, depending on site conditions.
Capacity: Confirm that its maximum drilling depth and diameter meet your needs.
Step 2: Planning and Preparation
Determine the Well Location: Choose a location away from pollution sources (toilets, garbage dumps).
Prepare Drilling Fluid: If the formation is loose, clay and clean water will be needed to make mud to protect the well walls and carry drill cuttings.
Prepare Pipes: Purchase suitable well pipes (filter pipes and solid pipes) and filter media (such as coarse gravel).
Step 3: Drilling Construction (Core Step)
Opening the Hole: Keep the drill pipe vertical and open the hole smoothly.
Drilling: Adjust the drilling pressure and rotation speed according to the formation, and add drilling fluid in a timely manner.
Running the Casing: After drilling to the target depth, immediately run the connected well casing into the well. This is crucial to ensure the well does not collapse and does not produce sand.
Gravel Packing: Fill the annular space between the well casing and the well wall with filter media to form a natural filter.
Well Flushing: Repeatedly flush the well with a submersible pump or air compressor until the water is clear.
Step 4: Installation and Maintenance
Install a suitable deep well pump and connect the power supply and water outlet pipe.
Regularly test the water quality to ensure drinking water safety.
The wellhead must be sealed to prevent backflow of surface sewage.
