How a Drilling Rig Works
Okay, let's use the most common rotary drilling rig (such as an oil rig or water well rig) as an example to explain how it works in a simple way.
You can imagine it as a giant, continuously extending "screw" drilling into wood.
Step 1: Starting and Breaking
The drilling rig's power system (diesel engine or electric motor) starts working, driving a device called a rotary table to rotate.
The drill pipe (a long steel pipe) is clamped in the center of the rotary table and rotates with it.
The drill bit is connected to the bottom of the drill pipe, which starts to rotate at high speed, using its hard teeth (such as diamond or carbide) to break the rock underground.
Step 2: Circulation and Cutting Cleaning
This is a crucial step to ensure continuous drilling.
The drilling rig uses a huge mud pump to pump a special drilling fluid (commonly known as "mud") at high pressure through the drill pipe and into the well.
The drilling fluid rushes out of the drill bit's nozzle, cooling the hot drill bit and carrying with it the rock fragments broken by the drill bit. The drilling fluid, mixed with debris, then returns to the surface through the annular space between the drill pipe and the wellbore wall.
Step 3: Processing and Circulation
The returning drilling fluid passes through a vibrating screen and purification system, acting like a sieve to remove rock debris.
The purified, clean drilling fluid is then pumped back into the well, forming a continuous circulation system to ensure a clean bottomhole.
Step 4: Extending Drill Pipe
After the drill bit has penetrated a certain length of drill pipe, it stops.
The driller uses tools to lift a new drill pipe, tightens it to the one at the wellhead, and continues drilling.
This process repeats, extending the drill pipe section by section like a telescope, until the target depth is reached.
Summary
Simply put, the operation of a drilling rig is a perfect coordination of three actions:
Rotation: The rotating drill bit breaks up the rock.
Pushing: Pumping drilling fluid to cool the drill bit and carry away debris.
Connecting: Continuously extending the drill pipe to advance deeper. Through this cycle, the drilling rig can create holes thousands of meters deep in the earth.
